Mr. Varano Says:
I know this is a wine blog, and I sure don’t want to write about politics. We live in a world where it’s hard to decide what’s real and what isn’t. Politicians pander and shout rhetoric at us, the media bombards us with half truths. As consumers, our job is to wade through the b.s. and try and make heads or tails, and ultimately decide the best course of action for ourselves and not be so dependent on outside sources. If it makes sense, stick with it, if it doesn’t make sense, change it. We tend to start questioning who we are when times get tough, don’t make drastic changes, just in case, stay the course, hold the wheel straight and analyze everything as you go forward.
Now, let’s get back to wine, my point is that even though there is a lot of uncertainty, this is also a time of opportunity. The Euro is dropping like a rock and just like oil, there is a huge glut of great wines available. All of a sudden, vintages are backing up at distributors, vendors are worrying about carrying too much inventory and people need to move product. Now is the time to scour wine shops and talk to the owners, ask them what their distributors are running on post off for the month. You’d be surprise what might be available at a reduced rate.
I think Congress will act and do something to ease our credit crunch, I also believe sometime next year things will start to move forward. Everything is cyclical; we’ll have a new president, who will be energized to get things moving in the right direction. Let the lawmakers worry about fixing things, and we’ll worry about finding all the great wine that’s sitting in warehouses around the country.
I’ve been having a field day grabbing great wines to special in Varano’s over the last four months and our customers have been treated to some great tasting opportunities. This month we’ll be featuring a wine from the Veneto region. Allegrini is one of the top producers of Amarone, Corte Giara is their second label, produced in the same region with the same winemaker. The Allegrini family has been expanding their territory in Italy, moving into Montalcino and Bolgheri as well as producing other labels in the Veneto. For the month of October, Varanos will be featuring a Ripasso wine from Corte Giara, I can’t say enough about the quality of the wines of Corte Giara, made under the direction of winemaker Franco Allegrini,. The best part of this wine is its approachability; this wine will pair with a good portion of our menu, including exotic dishes. It is also a wine that is great when you just want to relax and enjoy a nice glass of wine.
Life is too short to drink cheap wine, find a great bottle of wine, pair it with an awesome meal and let the politicians work out the rest.
