Belguardo Estate in Maremma

The Belguardo Estate in Maremma is located between Grosseto and Montiano, about six miles from Italy’s west coast. The owners of Belguardo are the Mazzei family. The Mazzei family own Castello di Fonterutoli, one of Chianti Classico’s premier estates. The Mazzei family has owned Castello di Fonterutoli for twenty-four generations, dating back to 1435 AD. The current owners, Lapo Mazzei and his sons, Francesco and Fillipo realized the potential for producing great wines in the Maremma region back in the 1990′s. With the recent acquisition of about 40 additional hectares of bordering vineyards, the winery will now have to expand their wine cellar. These are the kind of problems business owners love to have.

The Belguardo Serrata wine is a blend of 65% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet and 5% Merlot. This is one of those special wines that flies under the radar. If you’re a lover of Super Tuscans, this wine has your name all over it. We’ve been fortunate enough to purchase the rest of our Distributor’s allocation of this wine and are featuring it as our wine of the month during August. At Varano’s we are committed to finding the best wines at the best values for our patrons. There are so many wines to choose from, sometimes it’s nice to have someone do it for you. I had the distinct pleasure of tasting this wine for the first time with Francesco Mazzei one afternoon this spring, when Francesco was visiting Varano’s. The wine is not only a great drinking wine, it’s a personal favorite. Enjoy.
