Why I love going to Vin Italy

Every spring I take the Pilgrimage to Verona for Vin Italy. A five day Wine Fair for the Industry that features over forty-three hundred wineries pouring over one hundred thousand different wines. The fair is a complete test of will, the temptation to want to taste everything in sight is almost overwhelming. I have to put together an excel spread sheet with scheduled tastings with all the importers I do business with. Many of the wines at the fair are not imported into the United States, and your palate is only good for about 150 tastes over the course of the day. To waste any on wines not imported into our country is almost sacrilege. I know it’s hard to feel sympathy for me and my dilemma, the fact is it really is difficult and requires self control. If you want to taste with the owner or winemaker of a winery, you just can’t risk arriving at their booth slurring your words or worse looking even slightly intoxicated.

I pride myself on professionalism, I spend days researching new wines available in the United States that are what I consider to be value wines. These are wines I can sell on my wine list for twenty to twenty-five dollars a bottle. I want everyone who visits Varano’s to be able to have a great selection of drinkable wines at reasonable prices. One of the added perks of attending Vin Italy is I get to meet and spend time with Owners and Winemakers of the different wines we sell on our list. I’ve been very fortunate to lure a number of them to Wells, Maine for our wine dinners, making them all the more authentic. Surprisingly, Italians have an incredible passion for Maine Lobster. I would have to say their passion equals my passion for their wine. Whenever someone finds out I’m from Maine and have a Seafood Restaurant as well, the first thing out of their mouth is “Do you serve Maine Lobster?” It’s actually quite comical.

The highlight of the event is at the end of the day, that’s when the fun begins. The major producers in the area open their villas to host incredible galas. It’a alot like the who’s who in the Italian Wine Trade. Attendence is by invitation only and fortunately I’m able to attend several each year. Like all lovers of wine, owners of wineries are very generous with their wine. One producer even allows you to bottle your own personal bottle of his best wine and signs it for you to take home as a souvenir. Last year one producer was serving their 1964 Amarone, which was showing beautifully and still had more time left. The fruit on the nose was still young and the finish was long, silky and quite elegant.

I could write all day about this fair, the reality is to me it’s like a fairy tale. For five days I share my passion for Italian Wine with about 175,000 people in all walks of my industry. Memories are made and moments shared, the comraderie is over the top. This year I’m taking my daughter with me, I don’t think she’d have let me go without her. We share the same passion for Italian Wine and are planning a rigerous schedule. Not everyone can make it to Italy for a wine show, however, most major cities now feature wine shows and even some Italian Wine Shows. Make it a point to seek one out and see what all the excitement is, you’ll not regret it.
